Planktic foraminifera iodine/calcium ratios from plankton tows

چکیده

Planktic foraminifera test iodine to calcium ratios represent an emerging proxy method assess subsurface seawater oxygenation states. Several core-top studies show lower planktic I/Ca in locations with oxygen depleted waters compared well oxygenated environments. The reasoning behind this trend is that only the oxidized species of iodine, iodate, incorporated foraminiferal calcite. calcite thought reflect iodate contents seawater. To hypothesis, we compare ratios, obtained from plankton tows, published and new concentrations 1) Eastern North Pacific extensive depletion, 2) Benguela Current System moderately concentrations, 3) South Atlantic. We find lowest (0.07 µmol/mol) retrieved Pacific, higher values for samples (up 0.72 tow environments waters, however, are order magnitude core-tops similarly well-oxygenated regions. This would suggest gain post-mortem, either when sinking through water column, or during burial.

Dates on Planktic Foraminifera from a Gulf of Mexico Sediment Core: an Assessment of Stratigraphic Continuity

A series of recent papers has called for multiple radiocarbon dates on planktic foraminifera to assess stratigraphic continuity in deep-sea sediment cores. This recommendation comes from observations of anomalous 14C dates in planktic foraminifera from the same stratigraphic level. Potential reasons include bioturbation, downslope transport, secondary calcification, carbonate dissolution, and d...

Intraspecific stable isotope variability in the planktic foraminifera Globigerinoides sacculifer: Results from laboratory experiments

Laboratory experiments conducted on the multichambered planktic foraminifera Globigerinoides sacculifer are used to determine the effect of symbiont photosynthesis on shell carbon and oxygen isotopic composition. Stable isotope analyses of individual chambers secreted under controlled temperature and light levels show that chamber jl3C values increase with increasing light levels. The effect of...

Comparison of Light Traps and Plankton Tows for Sampling Brachyuran Crab Larvae in an Alaskan Fjord

We compared the effectiveness of light traps and plankton tows for sampling brachyuran crab larvae in Bartlett Cove, Glacier Bay, Alaska, U.S.A. during three nights each in July and August 2001 and June, August, and September 2002. Proportions of species and stages were used to compare larvae caught by light traps and plankton tows. Absolute numbers of larvae are difficult to compare because of...
